Museum accessibility

The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is open for everyone and strives to maintain an environment that is accessible and adapted to all. This section gathers useful information for planning a visit to the museum for people with reduced mobility as well as visual or hearing impairment and contains practical information of general interest.

Accessibility of Environment, Car Park and Entrance to the Building

• Around 2-minute walk away from the museum, on the corner of Kungu iela and Kaļķu iela, there are 2 free parking places for persons with disabilities who hold a parking permit. Around 3-minute walk from the museum, on the corner of Mārstaļu iela and Peitavas iela, there are 2 further free parking places for persons with disabilities who hold a parking permit. The nearest car parks can be found here.
• The museum building is located in the Old Town, it is a church building constructed in the 13th century, and there is a street-level step-free entrance from Skārņu iela (assistance is required to open the door wider).

Description of the Building

• The building has a narrow lift – the door opens to the width of 60 cm, the area of the floor is 80 x 105 cm. The lift provides access to the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building.
• To access the MDAD Great Exhibition Hall there are 6 steps, access to each of the permanent exhibitions has 3 steps.
• Guide and assistance dogs are permitted inside the museum.
• Generally, the exhibition spaces are sufficiently and uniformly illuminated, without sharp changes in lighting. Please contact us to receive detailed information about the use of artificial and natural light in the building.

Accessibility of Services

• Children under 18 with disabilities, persons with group I or II disabilities (on presenting a disability certificate) and one person accompanying a child under 18 with disabilities or a person with group I disability as well as orphans or children without parental care (on presenting a certificate) are entitled to free admission to the museum.
• The guided tours offered by the museum's specialists can be adapted to the needs of the audience by agreeing on the course of the activity in advance.
• The museum uses pictograms and signage to help finding way around the premises.

For Visitors with Children

• For the convenience of our youngest visitors, children's pushchairs for interior use are available in the museum's cloakroom.
