Lecture:
Color as an expression of identity in the context of the antique sculpture painting tradition

Antique and Renaissance Plaster Cast Exhibition “Forest of Sculptures” at the Museum Storage Facility invites to a lecture and conversation about the ancient sculpture painting traditions.

Seeing colours means rethinking colours and thus re-evaluating the significance of colours in relation to form. This requires, especially if we are looking at sculptures, a cognitive process that does not judge historical works of art by the standards of our present-day experience and aesthetic evaluation, but rather sees them in the context of the dominant Zeitgeist of the time. But even contemporary art movements are embedded in global historical contexts, so that with regard to painted sculptures, it looks back to a tradition that is thousands of years old and shows that people across epochs and across the globe always coloured three-dimensional works.

The lecture in English by Dr. Katharina Mann, which is held in context of the pop-up project “Seeing Colours – Understanding Antiquity?” at the Antique and Renaissance Plaster Cast Exhibition “Forest of Sculptures”, reflects on the tradition of painted sculptures, in order to show why the Greeks and Romans also created their sculptures in magnificent colours.

During the presentation, there will be a chance to touch a hypothetical colour reconstruction of an antique sculpture.
