The memorial collection of Jāzeps Grosvalds

The memorial collection dedicated to the great artist Jāzeps Grosvalds (1891-1920) was established in 2005 on the basis of a bequest from Gerda Bokaldere and a purchase of many artworks from the artist’s relatives. The collection contains 2,483 items, including drawings produced by the artist in childhood and adolescence, periodicals which he produced for his family, as well as sketchbooks which he had with him no matter where he was. The collection includes drawings which Grosvalds produced while studying in Paris and then travelling through France, Spain and other European countries. There are drawings which illustrate the Latvian Red Riflemen and Latvian refugees of World War I. Grosvalds didn’t even stop drawing while part of the military himself. He drew scenes from absolutely every place that he ever lived – Jūrmala, Rīga, Paris, Munich, etc.

In addition to the artworks, the Jāzeps Grosvalds memorial collection includes many documents and photographs depicting the artist, his family and his friends.
