Painting Collection
The museum’s collection of paintings is the most popular and traditionally most beloved part of the overall collection. The museum has nearly 7,000 paintings from more than 630 artists. Among them are enormously distinguished artists such as Jūlijs Feders, Janis Rozentāls, Vilhelms Purvītis, Ludolfs Liberts, Voldemārs Matvejs, Konrāds Ubāns, Jānis Liepiņš, Jānis Pauļuks, Boriss Bērziņš, Biruta Baumane, and others. The collection presents the work of many artists very completely, beginning with works created when the artists were students, continuing with diploma paintings, and ending with paintings from the latter years of their lives. Most artists, however, are represented with only a few major works of art.
