Latvian Museums Association Annual Award 2016:
Publication of the Year

The LNMA publication Art and the Latvian State has received the Latvian Museums Association award in nomination Publication of the Year 2016. The author of the book is Dr. art. Ginta Gerharde-Upeniece, the director of the Visual Art department in the Latvian National Museum of Art.

Art and the Latvian State by art historian Ginta Gerharde-Upeniece is dedicated to the art life of the Republic of Latvia in the interwar period (1918–1940). The monograph examines the relationship between art and power through an art historical perspective. Not only it is a historical survey of the cultural state policy but it is also a crucial publication for the development of the sociology of art as an academic discipline in Latvia. By exploring the boundaries between art historical and sociological theories, the book serves as a useful source of information for the culture policy makers.

Publication is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, State Capital Foundation and the Institute of France.
