The Marche Region – discover the beauty of Italy!
The Week of the Marche Region in Riga and the display of Raphael’s painting at the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE
From 20th until 23rd of March 2018, the Marche region and the Embassy of Italy in Latvia will organize several events to celebrate one of the most richest and beautiful regions of Italy.

Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, in the heart of Italy, with slightly more than a million and a half inhabitants spread among its five provinces of Ancona, capital city, Pesaro and Urbino, Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno, the Marche, which has always been Italy’s “Gateway to the East”, is the country’s only region with a plural name and which is home to very different environments and landscapes.

Featuring the mountains of the Apennine chain, which gently slope towards the sea along parallel valleys, the region is set apart by its rare beauty and noteworthy figures such as Giacomo Leopardi, Raphael, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Gioachino Rossini, Gaspare Spontini, Father Matteo Ricci, Frederick II of Swabia, all of whom were born there.

One of the Marche’s cities, Urbino, which was a focal point of the Italian Renaissance and the birthplace of the famous painter Raphael, in 1998 it was declared a UNESCO Heritage City.

Introducing The Marche Region Days in Riga, which will happen from 20th to 23rd of March, thanks to the Marche Region, Embassy of Italy in Latvia and the National Gallery of the Marche, the painting Santa Caterina d’Alessandria (1500–1503) by the great Italian High Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino known as Raphael (1483–1520) will be on view from 21 March to 22 April 2018 at the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE (Doma laukums 6). This is the first time when Raphael’s art is exhibited in Latvia, and this display is a gift from the Marche Region to the Republic of Latvia on its Centenary.

The Raphael’s painting has travelled to Riga from the artist’s home town, from the collection of the National Gallery of the Marche. Visitors of the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE will not only be able to see the Raphael’s early masterpiece, but also participate in different events related to Italian culture by discovering the Marche region.
